The Energy Data Initiative aims to help Americans benefit from entrepreneurial innovation enabled by open energy data from the US government and other sources.
To make it easier for business and consumers to save energy and money, we need to make it easier for them to understand how they use energy. That is why the Obama Administration partnered with the utility industry and space issued a challenge to them to make it easier for electricity customers to get secure online access to their own household or building energy-use in a consumer- and computer-friendly format, called “Green Button.”
As the 2012 hurricane season kicks off, the Energy Department stands ready to coordinate with the energy sector, and other federal agencies, to protect and restore the energy infrastructure and systems in potential disaster areas.

This month, the number of customers who can expect access to Green Button data grew to almost 31 million, thanks in part to Portland General Electric’s (PGE’s) announcement last Thursday, expanding access to their 820,000 customers.
